De 44e editie van Amersfoort World Jazz Festival staat bijna weer voor de deur! Wij gingen in gesprek met onze Expectional Endorsed Talent van 2023, pianist en componist Siu Tin Chi, over haar ervaring met het festival, hoe zij werd verkozen tot Expectional Endorsed Talent en haar verwachtingen. Chi volgde een opleiding klassieke piano aan de Chinese universiteit van Hong Kong en later de New York Manhattan School of Music. Het was in New York waar ze uiteindelijk haar liefde voor jazzmuziek ontdekte. Haar composities combnineren klassieke melodieën met ingewikkelde jazzharmonieën, gekleurd door aanraking met de Arabische en Indiase wereldmuziek.
Voor Chi is dit de eerste keer dat zij op het festival speelt, maar onbekend met het festival is ze zeker niet.
“I went to Amersfoort Jazz Festival in 2022 for the second time. Lots of people I know play there, and I enjoy watching all the crossover concerts. The atmosphere at the festival is so good, and the people are very open minded”.
Chi vertelt dat veel kennissen uit het muzikale vakgebied dat jaar op de podia van Amersfoort Jazz stonden. Via een van haar gemeenschappelijke kennissen, raakte ze in gesprek met Matti, al ruim 10 jaar co-programmeur van het festival. Ze praatte over haar muziek, de link met jazz en haar liefde voor cross-overs:
“Matti then, said why don’t you send me some material, I would love to present more musicians that do cross-overs. Few weeks after sending Matti some of my materials I received an enthousiastic call, saying that he would love to introduce me for the festival”.
Niet lang daarna ontving Chi het bericht met het nieuws dat zij was geselecteerd als Expectional Endorsed Talent door een onafhankelijke programmacommissie van het festival.
“At first i was it was a scam”, verteld Chi lachend, “because as an individual bandleader, you never just get offers like this. We have to send out emails ourselves, to promote ourselves, and loads of the time we get rejections, or they don’t even reply”.
Toen het nieuws eenmaal was bezonken zette het enthousiasme in.
“Once I realized it wasn’t a scam, I felt like was in a dream. This chance, to play at this festival, is like a dream”.
Dit jaar staat Chi op de planken naast én met goede kennissen en voorbeelden uit het vakgebied
“I am very much looking forward to my concerts and am very excited to see some of my fellow musicians play, especially the new cross-over project Sunrise. Sanne Sanne is also very good. Lead vocalist Sanne Huijbregts is a warm person, and an amazing talent. We played together at the same jazz festival in France last year”.
Over haar verwachtingen van het festival reageert Chi enthousiast: “For myself, i just want to give a good concert, that’s its. All the other things are kind of out of our control”.

Chi is tijdens het festival in verschillende settings te zien. Op woensdagavond tijdens het Sena International Laureate Festival in Theater de Lieve vrouw met haar Chi Quartet, op donderdagavond in de St. Aegtenkapel met Dafa Trio.
