Hungarian Focus Night: Harcsa Veronika-Gyémánt Bálint Quartet / Peter Sárik Project: Lucky Dog / Petra Várallyay Trio (HUN)
The Focus Night in theater De Lieve Vrouw, features three Hungarian acts in the context this year’s Focus on World Jazz from Hungary.
Harcsa Veronika-Gyémánt Bálint Quartet
This quartet is formed by the renowned NowJazz Storytellers with an Ethereal Voice Harcsa Veronika (vocals) and Gyémánt Bálint (guitar) and the top-notch Belgian rhythm section. Together they create something genuinely Pan-European. A colorful world of storytelling melodies, the heritage of Eastern-European rhythmical sense and contemporary jazz dynamics are brought to life through Veronika’s mesmerizing voice and the three instrumentalists’ virtuosic playing. The group shares heartfelt stories with the audience about being young and European today, trying to find love and harmony in a world of drumming cities, cheap airlines, social media, and growing expectations. Veronika and Bálint have been working together since they were classmates at the Academy of Music in Budapest. The duo has developed a unique fullness of sound, making the listener forget, that there are only two musicians on stage. Now for the first time, the duo adds even more substance to their power by inviting drummer Antoine Pierre and bassist Nicolas Thys, the two creative virtuosi Veronika met during her studies at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels.
Peter Sárik Project: Lucky Dog
The album ‘Lucky dog’ was released in 2017 and nominated for the Fonogram award (the ‘Hungarian Grammy’) in the jazz category ‘Jazz album of the year’ in 2018. It features the Péter Sárik Trio and four excellent Hungarian jazz musicians. Peter Sárik invited his favorite fellow musicians into this collaboration and wrote new songs for each of them in their own style. This resulted in a truly colorful album “full of smiles”, as one music critic described it. “All members are all very positive, energetic and cheerful people, which guarantees a fun atmosphere in our concerts,” says Peter Sárik about this project. “In my experience, the audience can also feel this positive energy that resonates from the stage, and they enjoy immersing themselves in it.”
Petra Várallyay Trio
The trio of multi award-winning violinist, singer and pianist Petra Várallyay (1992) plays rhythmic and harmonic complex compositions with straightforward, instinctive musicality that speaks directly to the audience. Their concert is a captivating journey with an extremely wide dynamic and emotional spectrum, ranging from deeply melancholic soundscapes to intense metal grooves. With Zalan Berta (bass guitar) and Balazs Szikora (drums).
