Singer, songwriter and educator Jodi Fredericks is no stranger to several of South Africa’s most renowned stages. She has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) several times, Jazz on the Rocks and the annual Cape Town Jazzathon, run by Craig Parks. In 2019, Jodi was crowned the winner of the Grand West Open Mic Jazz Competition.
Jodi’s CTIJF experiences started in 2014 when she was a member of the Allstar Band, which performed at the Green Market Square Free Concert. Later in 2018, she lead the Sekunjalo Edujazz Big Band conducted by Mark De Kock. In 2019 she backed Donvino Prins. She has attended the formerly known – Standard Bank Grahamstown National Youth Jazz Festival, now known as the Makhanda National Arts Festival – several times where she was selected for various ensembles and performances.
Jodi graduated at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town in 2019 with a BMus Honours in Jazz Performance, majoring in Jazz Vocals. In her pursuit to further her education she entered the SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organisation) foundation Overseas Scholarship competition in 2019 where she was selected as one of 6 semi-finalists in the country and went on to receive the merit award.
In 2020, Jodi made an appearance on Tussen Ons with Tracey Lange and returned to the show in 2022 with South African production and songwriting duo ‘Do Not Disturb’, to perform and shed light on their collaboration ‘Better Off (Without You)’. The song has been on rotation on several radio stations across the country since its release and Jodi has done several radio interviews since she’s been in the industry including Heart FM, Goodhope FM and KFM. The song has also been supported by Apple Music, who placed the song on an international playlist since the onset of the release. She is currently working on her debut project which is set to be released within the next few months and is guaranteed to take you on a journey of experiences from her own life while providing a voice for those around her.
Jodi was commissioned to write for the MNET Original movie “Late Bloomer” which premiered on MNET on the 12th of February 2022. The movie is also available on Showmax and can be streamed at anytime. Along with writing and recording one of the tunes, “More” on the soundtrack, she also features on another song on the soundtrack “next to me” written by and performed with Seth Grey. Jodi features on the debut album, Bait For Steps Forward, of South African pianist, violinist, composer, arranger and producer Nobuhle Ashanti, due to be released in June 2022.
