Amersfoort World Jazz Festival

Typhoon is National Artist in Residence 2023

Dutch rapper and artist Glenn de Randamie, aka Typhoon, is National Artist in Residence during the 44th edition of the Amersfoort World Jazz Festival. When festival director Alexander Beets asked him if he wanted to become National Artist in Residence at Amersfoort World Jazz Festival 2023, he didn’t have to think long. ‘We want to show Typhoon in different settings where he can also express himself artistically as a curator, inspirator, narrator and connector.’ This has resulted in four completely different concert programs, in which Glenn also includes new promising musicians in his programs. In various encounters, Typhoon translates his energetic and compelling music to a wide audience and addresses moving and topical themes. During the Indoor Veranda Sessions in Theater De Lieve Vrouw, Typhoon presents home-grown talent. These are acoustic sessions inspired by the American tradition, in which musicians make music in small formations in and around the verandas.

In the Inspirational Sessions, Typhoon performs familiar and new material in which the rapper exposes his soul and bliss. Among other things, it reflects on 150 years of the abolition of slavery and the search for cultural and musical traditions that were born from this in an intimate setting.

On Friday 18 August, Typhoon and Amersfoort present World Jazz Festival Homecoming: a concert in which jazz, hip-hop and spoken-word alternate and reinforce each other. Together with numerous guest musicians, Typhoon takes us on a musical quest for the roots of jazz in all its forms and functions. This concert takes place at the Lieve Vrouwekerkhof.
