Each year, Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz invites an International Artist in Residence to perform at the festival. In 2018 this will be American tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, known for his sophisticated but energetic hard bop and post-bop style. Alexander first achieved fame by finishing in the top 3 at the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition (with Joshua Redman and Chris Potter). Alexander began recording albums and touring worldwide with great artists like Harold Mabern, Pat Martino, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron, George Mraz and Jon Faddis and many more. More than one jazz critic has claimed that listening to tenor saxman Eric Alexander unfettered and at length, is one of the greatest treats in jazz. At Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz 2018, Eric Alexander performs at theatre De Lieve Vrouw on Thursday May 24 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the festival with the Amersfoort Jazz All Star Jubilee Band. On Saturday May 26, Eric Alexander joins Trio Peter Beets at the Groenmarkt for the CD release concert of ‘Trio Peter Beets plays the music of Marius Beets’.
