Amersfoort Jazz honors Dexter Gordon

On Thursday may 23, festival Amersfoort Jazz is happy to host jazz historian Maxine Gordon, wife and manager of legendary saxophonist Dexter Gordon (1923-1990), who gigged Amersfoort in the sixties, to launch the book ‘Sophisticated Giant: The life and legacy of Dexter Gordon’. Dutch drummer Eric Ineke, who played with the maestro himself, will perform a concert titled ‘Tribute to Dexter Gordon’, with notable Dutch tenorist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen. To crown it all, American jazzsinger Deborah Brown, International Artist in Residence at Amersfoort Jazz 2019, joins Eric Ineke and his group. Maxine Gordon will be in attendance at the concert, available to sign copies of her book.

This concert, preceded by a concert of Chicuelo & Marco Mezquida (ESP), is the only concert of Amersfoort Jazz, not free of charge to the public. Tickets (€10,-) are available at

On Saturday May 25, there will be a screening of ‘Round Midgnigt’, the 1986 American-French film directed by Bertrand Tavernier, starring Dexter Gordon (Oscar Nomination and Grammy Award), also including cameo’s from Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and Wayne Shorter. Again Maxine Gordon will give a presentation with anecdotes and of course be available to those in attendance to sign copies of her book.
