Composer/pianist Jef Neve, born in 1977, has quickly become a prominent figure in Belgian jazz, and his international reputation is still growing. He graduated in 2000 in Leuven as Master of Music in Jazz and classical piano, both with great distinction. In 2001 he specialized in Chamber Music and was rewarded the diploma ‘cum laude’. He followed master classes with Brad Mehldau, Martial Solal, Billy Hart, Kenny Werner and others. In 2004, the ‘Pascal Schumacher/Jef Neve Quartet’ won first prize at ‘Tremplin Jazz’ in Avignon. He started touring, whether as a solo-performer or with the ‘Jef Neve Trio’, from Denmark to Australia, from Canada to Japan. The famous British jazz critic Stuart Nicholson wrote about Neve: “His very personal approach to the piano trio announces the arrival of a huge promising young musician that has the potential to become an important voice in the European jazz scene to be.” He participated in several projects and worked with great artists like the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Michel Tabachnik, José James (the music of Coltrane), Jamie Cullum, Branford Marsalis, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Ilse de Lange and Typhoon. During the first edition of the Leuven Jazz Festival (2014), Jef scored a big hit curating an evening with an occasional combo with Richard Galliano, Koh Mr. Saxman, Dré Pallemaerts and Ruben Samama. His first solo album ‘One’, released that same year, partly recorded in Abbey Road studio’s in London, was his definite breakthrough as a soloist. Jef Neve was the recipient of many prizes and awards: 3 x ZAMU and 4 x MIA (Best Composer/Best Musician) and an Edison. Jef Neve’s latest album Spirit Control (2017), includes a string quartet and with this ensemble he is currently doing the Spirit Control Theater Tour in the Benelux. Jef Neve will perform with Spirit Control during the Belgian Focus Night at Amersfoort Jazz Festival, on May 26 2018, at theatre De Lieve Vrouw.
